The Bangkok forts and the canals were constructed to provide protection and security to the capital which is now a modern metropolis. Amongst a number of forts built along the Chao Praya River, the fort which is still erect and intact is Phra Sumen Fort. Even the canons in the fort territory is in place. Phra Sumen Fort in Bangkok is situated at the meeting point of Phra Athit Road and Phra Sumeru Road. This fort was built in during the reign of King Rama I in the year 1783. Along with this fortress 14 other fortresses and several battlements were were also constructed during that time period. The Phra Sumen Fort represents the octagonal shape with three levels. The inside of the walls house steps which lead up to the fortress. The fortress comprises of 38 rooms within which there is a huge collection of ammunitions and weapons.

The fortress was restored by the Fine Arts Department in the early 1980s after the roof of the fortress collapsed during the reign of King Rama IV or V.

To add to the tourist attraction the fortress has been surrounded by a small park. Besides this, the pleasant walk along the Chao Phraya river is an added attraction.
