Wat Lokayasutharam

Wat Lokayasutharam is an ancient temple located in the city of Ayutthaya. What attracts tourists from all over the world to this temple, is its huge reclining statue of Lord Buddha. The structure is grand and inspires awe and wonder in the heart of viewers. The magnitude and grandure of the edifice is enchanting. Wat Lokayasutharam is located near Wat Worachettharam and Wat Worapoh. This statue of Buddha called Phra Budhasaiyart is 37 meters long and 8 meters high. The statue is east facing and is made of cement and bricks. The head of the statue is placed on a lotus and the legs are overlapping. This is done to emphasise on Lord Buddha's equal sized toes. Architectural styles of the middle Ayutthaya period predominates the entire edifice and the temple structure.
The structure and the statue had been a subject of damage and erosion. In the year 1954 the Department of Fine Arts and Alcoholic Beverage Factory funded the renovation of the statue. The renovation work was completed in the year 1989 by Lady Rabiab Dhamrongnahwahsawat. The entire temple premise is filled with different sizes of statues of Buddhas. The main Buddha statue is situated outdoor without a vihara or a shelter. However it is believed that earlier there used to be a tin shelter over the statue. But after being struck twice by lightning, the local authorities decided to remove the vihara. The sight of the Wat Lokayasutharam will leave vivid impressions in your mind.
