Bang Pa In Summer Palace |
Located approximately 40 miles north of the city of Bangkok, the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace has a broken history. This palace owes its inception to king Prasat Thong who had built it on the Bang Pain island in Chao Phraya river. But after 1767 this palace fell into disuse. Later king Rama IV rebuilt the palace and used it as his residence for some time. However the present Bang Pa-In Summer Palace that we see, was built by king Chulalongkorn during the period from 1872 to 1889. Apart from special occasions and banquets, this palace is rarely used by the present royalty of Bangkok. Chinese craftsmen were initially hired for the construction. However later they were replaced by the Thai craftsmen.

Palace consists of two sections- the inner section and the outer section. The inner section was used for residential purposes by the royal family. The outer section was used for official purposes. Both the sections are connected by a covered bridge. A narrow river running though the inner section of the palace add to the beauty and grandure. The Bang Pa-In Summer Palace is known for its architectural brilliance. Different types of architectural styles have been used for different buildings. You can also notice traces of Chinese and Greek styles of architecture. The main building is built in the Swiss style. On close observation you will notice that the building is more like the monuments in Paris. In the midst of the royal garden there is a tower called the Ho Withun Thasana. The king used this tower to keep an eye on the countryside.
