Shanghai is placed on the Yangtze River Delta in East China. It is the largest city in the People's Republic of China and the ninth largest in the world. Shanghai is widely known as the center of China's modern economy. In terms of administration Shanghai is the municipality of the People's Republic of China. It has province-level status. In 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port and it is also one of the world's busiest ports. Shanghai was originally known as a sleepy fishing town, but by the turn of the twentieth century Shanghai became China's most important city. It grew to become the center of political intrigue, popular culture and intellectual discourse in the Republic of China.

Shanghai had also been credited of becoming the third largest financial center in the world. It ranked after New York City and London. Shanghai is the largest commercial city in the Far East during the late nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century. After 1949, when Shanghai was taken over by the communists it suffered under heavy taxation of the central government and cessation of foreign investment. Many of its "bourgeois" elements were ousted from political power. In 1992 the central government's authorized market-economic redevelopment and Shanghai developed to surpass the early-starters, like Shenzhen and Guangzhou. It has since led China's economic growth but the city still struggles to cope with increased worker migration and a huge gap between the haves and the have-nots.
