Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport or the Sahar International Airport is one of the busiest airports in India, and operates cargo as well as passenger flights. It operates from two distinct terminals:
The domestic terminal known as the Santacruz Airport.
The international terminal or the Sahar Airport.
The Juhu aerodrome was India's first airport, and now hosts a flying club and a heliport.
Recently, the Government has sanctioned a proposal for the construction of a new international airport near Panvel, Navi Mumbai in order to relieve the rising traffic pressure on the existing airports.
The airport is spread over a functional area of 1450 acres, but actually it covers an area as low as 1000 acres (4 kmē). It is India's biggest international and domestic hub. Apart from that, it serves the metropolitan area of the Mumbai city and the terminals are situated in the suburbs of Santacruz and Sahar. The airport was earlier known as the Sahar International Airport, when it was situated in the district of Sahar, near Andheri. It has been recently renamed after Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, the 17th century Maratha Emperor.
